About Us

Handmade In India is a company with a heart to see transformation occur through fair trade work in the lives of those who are vulnerable and exploited. It built a partnership with hand weavers of India in 2013 to bring a revolutionary change in the high end rug industry to eliminate the middleman and be the direct link between the maker and the buyer for handmade rugs. Our small yet passionate team aims to flourish the deep entrenched roots of native art not only by bringing the traditional art close to you but also plans to pass on the same to the future generation. STEP 1- CARDING

Our carefully selected wool becomes yarn in the hand of the Katwaris, artisans that layer its strands together, remove dirt and knots and finally channel centuries of Indian tradition on a charka, a spinning wheel.

STEP 2- SPINNING

Placing a dollop of wool on a bristled pad, she brushes it with another, removing clumped dirt, knots and giving the wool uniformity, gently caressing it to evolve into yarn

STEP 3-RUG DYEING

Rug dyeing is a traditional art that allows artisans to create decorative effects. Yarn is first segregated before the dyeing process. Lighter wool for lighter coloured dyes and darker wool for the darker dyes and texture by the feel. The texture is also important because it can determine the overall quality of the yarn. Blends of different wool help moderate how bristly or soft it turns out.

STEP 4-WEAVING

A range of weaving techniques are used to create different types of rugs, and the technique can determine the quality, design, price and even their durability.
